Novel Study

Our "Novel Study" approach is at the heart of developing key English skills such as oracy, reading, writing, grammar, punctuation, and spelling. Every year, children learn through high-quality books, ranging from picture books to novels. Through this, they develop a deeper understanding of the story, characters, and themes, while also building empathy and insight.

Our novel study curriculum is designed to:

  • Introduce children to carefully selected books from different cultures, time periods and authors with a variety of protagonists, plot types and genres
  • Encourage children to see themselves as the main characters in the stories they read immersing themselves in the emotions, dilemmas and traits of those characters ensuring passionate and creative writers
  • Expose children to big life questions and to learn to understand challenging situations and emotions in a safe, supportive environment
  • Develop creative and thoughtful responses in a variety of text types whether it’s a diary entry from a character’s point of view, a persuasive letter, or a newspaper report.
  • Provide children with their own copy of the book allowing them to dive into the text and feel the anticipation of turning to the next page.
  • Ensure pupils learn a wide and varying vocabulary

Our curriculum ensures that we focus on one novel for an extended period of time allowing for in-depth analysis. Children’s writing develops holistically as a natural and meaningful response to reading the chosen text. Through complete immersion, collaboration, dramatic retelling and expert reading, children are able to develop a nuanced understanding of theme and narrative structures. Pupils also focus on language analysis and authorial intent especially sentence and word level choices (tier two vocabulary). Drama strategies such as hot-seating and freeze-framing are integrated into classroom practice.
