Reading

Reading and stories are at the centre of everything we do at New Park – that’s why our school logo is a book! Learning to read opens up a world of stories, information, and ideas that help us understand and enjoy the world around us.

Our reading curriculum is designed to:

  • Encourage a love of reading and a fascination for books
  • Build confidence and skill in reading fluently with prosody
  • Develop understanding through comprehension skills and vocabulary knowledge
  • Expose pupils to a variety of text types and authors
  • Create confident readers who love to read independently and share aloud with others

Our curriculum follows a levelled reading scheme ensuring pupils develop their decoding and comprehension skills. Reading for pleasure is also integral to our curriculum where children can experience the pleasure of reading a good book. Our Year 5/6 buddies also have regular opportunities to meet with their KS1 counterparts to share stories together.

Every child takes two books home from school, one levelled reading book that matches the child’s phonological development and one chosen by the child to be read by themselves or to be shared with someone at home. By using a mix of phonics, guided reading, and independent reading, we ensure children develop a deep understanding of texts and become confident, lifelong readers.
